FoMC @ Merri Park

FoMC @ Merri Park is a local subgroup of Friends of Merri Creek who care for Merri Park, including the Merri Park Wetland, in Northcote.

The Merri Park Wetland was developed in 1999 and has become a biodiversity hotspot, providing habitat for small birds, amphibians and reptiles and a place for quiet contemplation for people. It also filters water from neighbouring housing estates and slows the flow of water into the Merri during heavy rain.

We are working to maintain and improve the vegetation of Merri Park by planting mid-storey and undergrowth and controlling weeds. Restoring indigenous vegetation provides food and habitat for small birds and swamp wallabies, which we hope to attract to the area after disruptions to their local habitat during and after the pandemic.

The group runs monthly weekend working bees, an annual planting on Mother’s Day and other ad hoc weeding, litter pick-up and general maintenance activities.
