FoMC Labyrinth

FoMC Labyrinth is a local working group of the Friends of Merri Creek who care for the Merri Creek Labyrinth and surrounds in Clifton Hill.

The Merri Creek Labyrinth was created by the community for the community over summer 2001-2002. The Labyrinth is a valued local resource for enhancing health and well-being. It’s a space about connection, with the self, community and nature, a place where individuals and a community can reflectively meditate on their lives — within the context of an urban yet natural environment. Simply, it’s a place to go that makes you feel better.

The Group was established in 2011 to help maintain and encourage the Labyrinth’s use as a free public space.

The Friends are local residents and from surrounding regions. We are always looking for like-minded people to help tend this beautiful space.

We gather for occasional working bees and network informally at the labyrinth or over coffee. We invite you to join our email list and participate as you are able.

History of Labyrinths

The Labyrinth is perhaps one of the oldest, and certainly one of the most mysterious symbols known to mankind. There is evidence of the existence of the classical Labyrinth symbol (the most ancient labyrinth pattern) across Southern Europe and North Africa from roughly 2000 BC. The Labyrinth is an analogy for life... It is not a maze or a puzzle to be solved but a path of meaning to be experienced. Its path is circular and convoluted, it has no dead ends. They were first designed as a type of spiritual journey to guide the visitor along a single path, twisting yet serene, not meant to confuse or puzzle as a traditional maze does.

Future Projects

We are constructing and cultivating native garden beds in the area surrounding the Merri Creek Labyrinth for the benefit of the community. The multi-year project will also enhance the structure itself with the natural rhythms of the local landscape.
