Paying the rent

26th April 2023

Friends of Merri Creek ‘pay the rent’ annually to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation’s Narrap team, who work on restoration and regeneration of landscapes, establishing of biodiversity corridors, ecological-cultural burns and more.

Paying the rent is when a person/business/community organisation acknowledges that they are operating from unceded Aboriginal Land, and thereby donates a portion of money or income to a grassroots First Nations organisation in the same way that they would make payments for other living expenses such as house rent, streaming platform subscriptions, utility bills etc. So, for each new membership, we pay $1, with last year’s contribution being $566. You can find out heaps more info about paying the rent here!

We acknowledge that the land we are now caring for has been managed for tens of thousands of years by Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and that colonial invasion impacted this significantly. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal Land.
